Chapter 03June 2026–now
Vision Without Borders is now the structure connecting clinical exchange, education, research, and community support.
Vision Without Borders incorporated in Colorado and submitted its federal tax-exempt application. Clinical instruction at Stanford, global-health fellowship work, and international teaching continued alongside the organization’s launch.
Chapter 02Aug 2025–May 2026
The concept moved from a storytelling and fieldwork pilot toward a durable nonprofit model.
An ARVO poster documented the pilot’s early reach: nine global-ophthalmology posts generated 53,000 impressions, with 71% coming from non-followers. The same month, the Northern California Screening Project brought the local-access mission into practice.
Work in Paraguay focused on preventable-blindness programs and the systems that allow locally grounded care to reach farther.
At the Rwanda International Institute of Ophthalmology, clinical work was paired with a uveitis teaching curriculum designed to support residents long after a visiting specialist leaves.
A community gathering brought the story of preventable blindness home and gave early supporters a direct way to help shape what came next.
Work with residents at Aravind Eye Hospital in Madurai, Salem, and Pondicherry centered on clinical exchange and shared learning.
Clinical work and high-volume outreach brought together surgical care, local expertise, and lessons from an international network of collaborators.
The early pilot ran alongside clinical instruction, resident surgical teaching, and planning for the Northern California Screening Project. A storytelling model began translating global ophthalmology into accessible public narratives.

Chapter 012017–2025
Years of research, training, policy advocacy, and reciprocal partnerships built the experience behind the model.
A formal exchange was established between the UCSF Proctor Foundation and Chulalongkorn University—an annual relationship built around knowledge moving in both directions.
Research published in JAMA Ophthalmology showed that a five-year corneal-donation deferral lacked scientific basis. In 2021, more than 50 lawmakers cited the data in a bicameral letter; in 2022, the FDA changed its guidance.
Spanish-language eye-health curricula supported residency training, while unlikely cross-sector partnerships helped bring screenings to workers who could otherwise be left out of care.
Smartphone-based imaging and independent ophthalmology workshops tested how training, validation, and screening tools could expand specialist knowledge beyond a single institution.
Fellowship and research work examined trachoma, the gut microbiome, and infectious blindness while connecting field outcomes to the biological mechanisms behind them.
